{Under the Sea} Ocean-Themed Sensory Bin

Welcome to our Under the Sea Adventure Week! I'm teaching my girls all about the ocean and sea life this week...with fun games, crafts, activities, stories and outings.

We started the week off with a little morning outing to Petsmart, just around the corner! Hey, its not exactly the Aquarium of the Pacific, but -- its FREE! Plus my girls LOVED looking at the wall filled with aquariums of fish, hermit crabs, frogs...even a turtle!

And its right there in the aisles of Petsmart that I saw a cute little plastic aquarium plant and had a *lightbulb* moment! I have always wanted to make my own "sensory bin" and this was the perfect opportunity to make one for my girls and see how they liked it.

So here it is....my very first Sensory Bin! You can let your imagination go wild or keep it simple. I didn't go too crazy...

I included turquoise aquarium gravel, plastic ocean animals, seashells, sea glass, plastic ocean plants,  a handmade whale toy,  little wooden treasure box and a felted mermaid.

The girls loved it! They had so much fun looking and playing with the little animals. They pretended that the animals were playing hide-and-seek under the "water".

They studied the sea glass with a magnifying glass. And filled the treasure box with the gravel (water), seashells and sea glass.

I'm definitely sold on the idea of sensory bins! I hope to make one each week to go with our weekly summer themes! The girls played with this one for at least 45 minutes and I'll take it out each day this week for them. It's also great that all of the stuff (gravel, little toys, shells, etc) are contained on a tray. It was easy to just pick it up and move the whole thing off the table when it was time to do something else.  Love that!
